The Islamist terrorist group, Boko Haram, has released a batch of more than 80 of the Chibok high school girls who were abducted in mid-April 2014.
The release reportedly came after talks with the government, though few details are confirmed.
Informed sources disclosed that another set of between 20-35 girls would be released before the end of this month.
Before this release, it was speculated that up to 192 Chibok school girls were still be held by the terrorist group
Agence France-Presse quoted a senior minister as confirming the release.
Sahara Reporters quoted a source as saying the freed girls were now in the town of Banki in Borno state, awaiting an airlift.
They would be taken to a secure location, the source said, for debriefing and would then be reunited with their families.
After the abduction in 2014, a number of girls escaped and Boko Haram then freed 21 last October, after negotiations with the Red Cross.
Last month, President Muhammadu Buhari said the government remained “in constant touch through negotiations, through local intelligence to secure the release of the remaining girls and other abducted persons unharmed”.
Boko Haram has kidnapped thousands of women and children, including more than 200 schoolgirls from the Borno town of Chibok in 2014, which brought the conflict to world attention.
At least 20,000 people have been killed since 2009. But abductions of foreigners have been rare.
