Afrobeats musician, Seun Kuti has been granted bail.
TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Kuti was granted bail on Tuesday after he was held for allegedly assaulting a police officer.
A video of the alleged assault went viral on social media.
After laying hold on him, the Lagos State Police Command arraigned Kuti before a Magistrate court sitting in Yaba, Lagos State.
The police sought to hold the defendant for 21 days pending legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions.
However, his counsel led by Femi Falana, SAN, pleaded with the court not to remand his client.
Falana stated that he was not aware of the remand application.
After listening to the plea, Magistrate Adeola Olatunbosun granted the bail.
However the court held that Kuti should be remanded for 48 hours in police custody to enable the police conclude it’s investigation.
He was admitted to bail in the sum of one million Naira with two sureties in like sum, at the end of the 48-hour remand.
The magistrate ordered that one of the sureties must be a landlord within the jurisdiction of the court.
Kuti had turned himself in at the Lagos State Police Command, Ikeja on Monday.
This followed an order for his arrest by the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba.
The defendant was charged with assault on a police officer, an offense contrary to Section 356 of the Nigerian Criminal Code Act.
Meanwhile, the court has charged the police to conclude their investigation into the alleged assault of the policeman within 48 hours.
The court adjourned to May 23, 2023, for mention.
