The former Senate minority leader who recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress Congress (APC), Godswill Akpabio, has dispelled reports that he is facing fresh challenges in his new party, APC.
There were reports that after Akpabio successfully moved into APC, internal bickering, politics is threatening his stability.
Critics speculated that the former minority leader in the senate is not being carried along in APC’s bid to claim the seat of the number three man in Nigeria. currently occupied by Bukola Saraki; while others said he [Akpabio] is embroiled in a power tussle over leadership of Akwa Ibom APC chapter.
But, in a phone conversation with TheNewsGuru [TNG], spokesperson of the former governor, Udom Jackson , said the reports making the rounds on the internet that his superior has been pushed aside in the race to replace Senate President, Bukola Saraki, is untrue.
Jackson noted that Akpabio is not in the contest of becoming senate president but rather concentrating on how to best work with Buhari in order to ensure he [Buhari] wins the 2019 presidential election.
His words, “The position of Senate President has already been zoned to the north, all Akpabio wants is to work with Buhari to make sure APC wins.
“He has left the PDP for good, and he isn’t bothered about what happened between now and May 29, his politics is beyond that.”
Also addressing the speculation that there is a political tussle among the leadership of Akwa Ibom APC, Jackson said nothing of such is in existence.
He confirmed that Don Etiebet, who is the erstwhile leader of the APC caucus in Akwa Ibom has endorsed Akpabio as the party’s leader in the state.
“As regards the alleged political battle in the leadership of APC in Akwa Ibom, there is nothing like that. There is no rancour between Etiebet and Akpabio.
Akpabio is the highest ranking political office holder in Akwa Ibom today and he is automatically the leader of the party at the state level, so there is no tussle about leadership.
even Etiebet has endorsed Akpabio as his leader” He noted.
Similarly, Jackson also clarified that there is no political battle between Akpabio and his political godson, Governor Udom Emmanuel.
He, however, stated that he [Akpabio] doesn’t believe in anti-party activities and as such will support any candidate presented by his new party, APC
