An Italian man, Filippo Ferlazzo, has been sentenced to 24 years in prison for the brutal murder of a 39-year-old Nigerian man, Alika Ogorchukwu, in July 2022.
The tragic incident took place on a central street in Civitanova Marche, Italy, where Ferlazzo assaulted Ogorchukwu, who was on crutches, in broad daylight.
The assault which occurred on July 29, 2022, in full view of horrified onlookers, resulted in fatal injuries.
The Italian Police subsequently arrested Ferlazzo the next day, on July 30, 2022, charging him with the murder of Ogorchukwu and theft of his phone.
The Police believe Ferlazzo attacked Ogorchukwu after a dispute over buying a handkerchief for Ferlazzo’s girlfriend.
After a thorough legal process, Ferlazzo was convicted and sentenced to 24 years in jail for causing Ogorchukwu’s death.
The Chairman/CEO of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the legal actions taken against Ferlazzo.
She acknowledged that while the loss of life can never be replaced, justice served in this case is a significant step forward.
“I am glad that this case finally got justice. Like I always say, there has to be consequences for actions,” Dabiri-Erewa stated.
She also commended the Nigerian Mission in Rome for diligently pursuing the case to conclusion and urged Nigerians in the Diaspora to be law-abiding and to contribute positively to their host countries while maintaining strong connections with their homeland.
