The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has charged corps members to refrain from exhibiting negative behaviour and focus on nation building during their one year national primary assignment. Abdulrazak Salawu, the NYSC FCT Coordinator, said this while addressing the Batch ‘A’ Stream I set of corps members at the end of their three weeks orientation course on Monday.
The orientation course was held at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Kubwa, FCT, from May 25 to June 12. Salawu urged the corps members to refrain from seeking bribes and going after money as that was not the reason why they were mobilised for the one year national service.
He called on them to accept their postings in good faith and focus on bringing development to the communities where they had been assigned to serve.
“I urge you to stay away from unnecessary travels and moving about late in the night for security reasons.
“There will be high expectations for you to perform well in the communities where you are posted.
“The Federal Government expects you to provide the necessary support to these communities.
“Focus on your duties and assignments and assist the communities you have been posted to serve; most of them need your support in terms of transferring your knowledge and the skills you have learned so far.
“Chasing after money will do you no good but focus on building yourself and improving on the skills you have learned at our Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme.”
He said that although corps members were trained in the skills acquisition programme for just nine days during the orientation course.
According to him, post camp training will still be held for the next six months of the service year.
He urged corps members to take advantage of the six months post camp training to improve on their knowledge and skills in order to be self-reliant and employers of labour.
The SAED, is a programme introduced by the NYSC, to train corps members in various skills set in order for them to become self-reliant and less dependent on white collar jobs.
Some of the skill areas include: Cosmetology, aggro-allied, culture and tourism, education, and ICT.
Others are automobile, film and photography, food processing, horticulture and landscaping, environment, power and energy and construction among others.
About 2,702 corps members registered for the 2017 Batch ‘A’ stream I orientation course in the FCT.
