The Eastern Union Congress (EUC) has called for an independent judicial panel to be constituted by the Federal Government of Nigeria to examine the causes of the crisis in Orlu Local Government Area of Imo State.
According to EUC, a think tank for the people of the old Eastern Region, now South East and South South, the panel should be made up of eminent personalities.
This is contained in a statement, which was signed and released by Chief Don Whiskey, Secretary of EUC, following preliminary review of the recent violence in Orlu.
The statement reads: “The Eastern Union Congress (EUC), a think tank for the peoples of the old Eastern Region, now South East and South South, after preliminary review of this week’s violence in Orlu, Imo State hereby condemns the handling of the situation by both the state government and security agencies.
“The EUC demands an independent judicial panel to be constituted by the Federal Government of Nigeria with eminent personalities to examine the causes of the crisis and recommend punishment for anybody found culpable.
“The EUC however regrets the death toll, and burning of properties in Orlu attributed to members of security agencies. The EUC see the continuing massacre of innocent citizens in the South East at the least provocation as part of a wider subjugation agenda and subtle continuation of the Nigerian-Biafran War of 1967 to 1970, which was waged by Nigerian federal government and her allies against the predominantly Christian Eastern region.
“The EUC is concerned that the security agencies, who are maintained with tax payers’ money, have mastered the art of attacking innocent civilians in the streets each time. Indeed, EUC is alarmed by anathema of the regular resort to scorched earth strategy, collateral damage and fear-mongering in every civil unrest internal security operations in the South East.
“The EUC notes that there is no other part of Nigeria where this type of operational rule book is applied other than the South East zone, not even the insurgency affected North East zone of the country. The South East zone is not at war with Nigeria! This approach must stop!
“From now on, we demand that only refined commanders, senior officers, who understand the modern rules of engagement, human rights, and diplomacy as means of policing are posted to the South East.
“In the event the judicial panel is not constituted on the Orlu crisis within one month from the date of this statement, the EUC will proceed with the evidence available to it to the international community”.
