The women of Rivers state daringly have told the Federal Government of Nigeria to restore security details to Governor Nyesom Wike or they will leave their homes to provide security for the Governor themselves.
The Rivers state women made this daring statement on Monday in a town hall meeting with Acting President Yemi Osinbajo when he visited the State to engage citizens on how best to tackle the challenges of the Niger Delta.
Governor Wike has, with the events that transpired with the rerun election of his State in December 2016, been stripped of his security details by the Federal Government.
While investigation of the events is still ongoing, the women of the State besieged Acting President Osinbajo at the meeting that held at the Government House in Port Harcourt for him to restore fully security for their governor.
Speaking at the meeting, Ankio Briggs, who represented the women of the State said, “We are calling on President Buhari administration to ensure that they restore the security details of Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, otherwise, we Rivers women will provide security for the Governor ourselves.
In the same vein, the Chairman of the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers, King Dandeson Douglas Jaja, called for the restoration of the security of Governor Wike. He said failure to do would mean that the Federal Government wants the Governor to come to harm.
Meanwhile, Wike said that his State is not in contention with the Federal Government. He said, rather, his State is complementing Federal Government efforts for national development.
“It is important for us to emphasize that the Government of Rivers State is not and cannot by any stretch of imagination be in contention with the Federal Government.
“We stand for the unity, progress and indivisibility of this nation and part of our mandate is to partner with the Federal Government to move the State and by extension, the nation forward. We have severally demonstrated this commitment from the very beginning of our administration with discernible actions,” Wike added.
