A tragedy that struck the Zaria Central Mosque, situated in the bustling city of Zaria in northwestern Nigeria’s Kaduna state on Friday afternoon, has killed seven persons.
TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) gathered that the historic Zaria Central Mosque which collapsed while hundreds of worshippers were engaged in the Jum’ah prayers, was built in the 1930s.
Authorities reported that twenty-three individuals were affected by the tragedy and promptly evacuated to hospitals by officials from the state’s Emergency Management Agency.
Zaria Emirate Council spokesman Abdullahi Kwarbai, said: “Four bodies were found initially, and then three others were found after the rescue team searched the collapsed mosque”.
The victims were laid to rest in a somber ceremony, while prayers were offered for the souls of those who perished within the very sanctuary they had gathered to worship.
reacting to the incident, the Kaduna Governor Uba Sani, ordered an immediate investigation into the disaster, pledging his commitment to assist those affected by what he referred to as a “heartbreaking incident”.
An advance team was dispatched to Zaria to assess the situation and offer support to the affected families and community.
