The Delta House of Assembly has said it will begin crackdown on fake news circulating on social media, particularly the ones emanating from those the House described as “dubious contractors”.
The Chairman, House Committee on Works, Mr. Evans Iwhurie, stated this when he paid a courtesy visit on the state Commissioner for Works, Chief James Augoye, in Asaba on Thursday.
Iwhurie said that the dubious contractors specialised in shopping pictures of badly executed road projects in other states and publishing them on social media as those constructed by the Delta government.
“We will no longer tolerate such actions which are capable of tarnishing the image of the present administration in the state,” he said.
The lawmaker said Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa’s administration had invested so much money in the construction of good road network across the state, while stressing that the State House of Assembly will not fail to sanction those bent on tarnishing the image of the State Government through blackmail on social media.
Iwhurie gave the assurance that the committee would continue to ensure that road contractors in the state delivered good jobs.
While commending the ministry for rehabilitating some failed Federal Government roads in the state, he called for continued cooperation between the ministry and the legislature.
The chairman pledged that the committee would support the ministry to overcome challenges facing it.
He further directed all contractors handling road projects for the state government to be on site during the committee’s inspection of the projects.
Earlier, the commissioner welcomed the committee chairman and members and said the ministry was ready to cooperate with them to enable it them achieve their objectives.
Augoye said that the state government had done a lot to improve service delivery by the ministry.
The commissioner added: “we just concluded a two-day retreat held in Warri for civil engineers in the ministry”.
