The exceptional achievements of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta state, a trained medical doctor, have earned him the well-deserved nickname of “Road Master.” This title became apparent to visiting journalists who were taken on a recent tour of various projects commissioned by the Okowa administration in Asaba.
During the tour, the governor’s Chief Strategist, Festus Okubor, asked the journalists about their most significant experience during the visit. While some mentioned remarkable projects like the Asaba Specialist Hospital, the Model Technical College, and the Dennis Osadaebey University, Dr Okubor astounded them by pointing out that they had not encountered a single pothole throughout their journey.
This accomplishment highlights the extensive efforts made by the Okowa administration in constructing and maintaining roads across the state. As of September 2022, a staggering 1,932.14 kilometers of roads have been completed under Governor Okowa’s leadership. To put this into perspective, it is equivalent to the distance between Lagos and Sokoto, and back.
The impact of the road master’s initiatives extends beyond Asaba to other major towns such as Ughelli, Agbor, Owa Oyibu, Warri, Sapele, Ozoro, and more. However, one ongoing project that stands out is the Asaba-Ughelli Expressway, which has made significant progress under the Okowa administration. This road serves as a unifying force, connecting the three senatorial districts of the state.
Dr Okubor emphasized the importance of this project, stating that it would enable the state to leverage the potentials of the Warri Port and tap into the advantages it offers for commercial activities. The completion of this road will provide a major incentive for goods destined for Onitsha to be directed to the Warri Port, benefitting the state economically.
“This road is a major commercial necessity, because with it the Federal Government having done the Ughelli-Patani, Warri-Patani-Port Harcourt Road, we can then leverage to get the Port in Warri busy because most of the goods arriving Lagos anyway are headed for Onitsha,” Okubor said.
Additionally, the Okowa administration has prioritized the construction of bridges to connect different parts of the state that were previously disconnected. Landmark bridges such as the Koka Flyover and Interchange in Asaba have transformed the entry point into the state capital. Other notable bridges include the Ovwor/Effurun-Otor Bridge in Ugheli South Local Government Area, Oha/Orerokpe/Oviore Bridge in Okpe council, and the Agbarho/Orherhe Bridge.
These bridges, along with several others, play a crucial role in enhancing transportation and commercial activities, improving the lives of the people. They provide direct links between communities, eliminating the need for canoes and other inconvenient means of transportation.
The impact of these road and bridge projects goes beyond mere infrastructure development. They create opportunities for economic growth, boost commerce, and improve the overall quality of life for the people of Delta State. Governor Okowa’s commitment to infrastructure development has garnered him the admiration and recognition as the “Road Master.”
As the Okowa administration continues to prioritize road construction and infrastructure development, it is clear that the governor’s dedication to improving the state’s transportation network will have a lasting impact. The nickname “Road Master” reflects Governor Okowa’s commitment to transforming Delta State and ensuring its prosperity for years to come.
