Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode said that the government is focusing on promoting computer literacy in the society, and encouraged the youths to embrace the initiative of enhancing their technological skills.
Governor Ambode made this known on Wednesday at the 8th edition of the Nigeria Computer Society’s annual conference and award tagged; Information Technology, A Tool for Sustainable Development held at the Lagos State Digital Village, Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos.
The Governor, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Science and Technology, Mr. Ogunnubi Olukayode, said that the State government has provided internet platforms by which residents and investors alike can make enquiries from the comfort of their homes through the use of internet-enabled computers or mobile application.
In his words, “One of the achievements of our administration is the application of technology to promote good governance and economic development. The provision of Wi-Fi services in designated locations in the State has also transformed Lagos into a Smart City”.
While noting that the Vehicle Number Plate Verification Portal, which secures the identity and status of vehicle owners in Lagos State, is one of such medium, he solicited the support of stakeholders in the ICT industry to give internet access to the people in rural areas.
Earlier, in his welcome address at the occasion, the Chairman, Nigeria Computer Society (NCS), Lagos Chapter, Mr. Onyeukwu Charles said the conference was organized with the aim of improving the Standard of Information Technology, with a view to driving the employment of information technology as a tool for National Development.
The Chairman appealed to the State Government to join the initiative of improving the standard of information technology which will produce informed youths in the State, adding that technology has a lasting solution to many challenges faced by the society which the conference intends to brainstorm on and proffer solution to.
Various speakers at the event appreciated the relentless efforts of the State Government in improving access to information technology.
The highlight of the occasion was the presentation of NCS Lagos Golden 2017 Award to honorary individuals of the society as well as different awards to secondary school students that emerged best in the West African Examinations in Lagos State.
