Between February 27th when Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) was first confirmed in Lagos State and now, the infection has spread to 18 States in Nigeria and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Although the infection continues to spread to more States in the country, given data being released by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), the outlook has continued to look good compared to what is obtainable in other countries.
However, the situation has been projected to worsen and citizens advised to keep safe.
In an earlier report, TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) had analysed the trends to watch out for as the infection spreads across the country and as more patients continue to recover from the disease.
By the end of March, COVID-19 had spread to 11 States and the FCT with 139 cases confirmed. Barely two weeks into April, the infection had spread to 19 States and the FCT with 318 cases as of April 11. Notice the pattern of spread in the zoomable map below (use landscape mode for better view on mobile).
Meanwhile, the prevailing trend in April shows that the curve has maintained a staggering downward trend after a spike was reported on 1st April.
According to the NCDC, at least 5,000 samples have been tested. From the samples that have been tested, as at 11th April, 318 cases were confirmed, showing an infection rate of 6.36%. Of the confirmed cases, 70 patients have recovered from the disease, indicating a recovery rate of 22%. However, 10 patients died, showing a death rate of 3.1%.
Let’s put this into perspective. By the time the NCDC had tested 10,000 samples, and if every other variable remains the same, it is likely confirmed COVID-19 cases in the country would still be below 1,000, with recovery at about 300 and about 30 deaths.
