In light of the upcoming elections in Nigeria, scheduled for February 25, the political situation in the country is heating up.

The Peoples Democratic Party nominated former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, while the All Progressives Congress nominated former Governor of Lagos State Bola Tinubu. For the less politically represented Labour Party and New Nigeria Peoples Party, former Governor of Anambra State Peter Obi was nominated.

Now presidential candidates try to win over the people of Nigeria, using different political instruments and methods.

In the context of money and fuel shortages the campaigning of the candidates becomes more and more tense. Lagos-based consultancy SBM Intelligence expects higher voter turnout and most closely fought election in Nigeria’s history.

To win overall, candidates need the highest number of votes and 25 percent of votes in two-thirds of Nigeria’s states. If no one achieves this, then Nigeria could have its first ever runoff.

Campaigning is now the most important task for the presidential candidates and they are looking for the ways to gain public affection with all available resources. According to information received from sources who wished to remain anonymous, certain candidates have even reached out to foreign political strategist and campaign aides, including specialists from Russia. Teams of hackers, sociologists, media and security professionals are believed to work in Nigeria now
