It is no longer news that Nigeria has conducted her 2019 Presidential and National Assembly polls. But the trickling down of results by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is gradually describing the actual scenario of “how are the mighty falling”.
Despite the massive campaign by these high and the mighty in the political space as regards the Senate, the Senate president, Bukola Saraki of the main opposition party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and his friend who turned arch rival following his defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Godswill Akpabio where defeated in a senatorial election by unpopular politicians.
While these lawmakers are still in shock over the unexpected defeat, the likes of Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu(Enugu, PDP) and Senator James Manager (PDP, Delta) scaled through the electoral hurdle for their fifth term.
Even as some old time politicians like former Senate President, David Mark( PDP, Benue) thought it wise to give room for former minister of Interior, Abbah Moro to replace him at the Senate, the likes of former governor of Enugu, Chimaroke Nnamani and his Abia counterpart, Orji Kalu contested and won their seats at the red chamber.
As usual, the election brought in some entrants that can make the difference at the chamber this time around. Among them are:
Dr. Ibrahim Oloriegbe
Oloriegbe is of the APC. He knocked down the Senate President, Bukola Saraki who represents Kwara central constituency.
Former Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Christopher Ekpenyong.
Ekpenyong, a PDP abstraction represents Akwa Ibom West Senatorial District. He sent the mighty Godswill Akpabio who was the senate minority leader of the PDP where he earlier belonged before defecting to APC months to the 2019 general elections.
Former aide to governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna, Uba Sani.
Sani is from the All Progressives Congress (APC). He defeated the fearless and vibrant senator who represents Kaduna Central under the platform of the APC before his defection to the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) months to the 2019 general elections.
Ishaku Cliff
Cliff who is of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) unseated one of the longest serving and only female Senator in the north who is from Adamawa State((APC), Senator Binta Garba from the 2019 general elections.
Ifeanyi Uba
Uba, an oil magnet is the first candidate of the Young Progressives Party YPP in the Senate. He clinched victory for YPP after trading tackles with a long serving Senator, Andy Uba in the 2019 general elections. He represents Anambra south Senatorial District.
