Ahead of the commencement of the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) the President of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday approved the sum of One Million and Three Hundred thousand dollars ($1.3M) as payment for outstanding wages for the Super Eagles coaching bench and the team as a whole.
The 2023 AFCON will commence on 13th January and will end on 11th February, 2024.
Super Eagles won their third AFCON trophy and are looking forward to winning it for the fourth time when hostilities begin in Ivory Coast on the 13th of January.
In order for the team to fully concentrate and not lose focus, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has boosted the morale of the Super Eagles Head Coach, Jose Peseiro who was owed backlogs of salaries and also the players who have not been paid their match bonuses dated back to 2021.
Super Eagles are currently preparing for the Africa most glamorous football competition in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates from where they connect to Nigeria before flying out to Cote D’Ivoire for the championship.
Nigeria’s opening match will be against Equatorial Guinea on Sunday, 14th January, before trading tackles with hosts, Cote D’Ivoire on 18th January, 2024, while they play their last group game against the Djurtus of Guinea Bissau on 22nd January in their last group match.
Meanwhile, the Nigeria football Federation has announced the cancellation of the two friendly games against Burkina Faso and Cape Verde.
According to NFF, the Super Eagles will play Guinea national team before jetting out to the host nation.
