Guinea Bissau senior men national team has overtaken Nigeria’s Super Eagles as the Group A table topper in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying series after defeating the whooping boys of the group, Sao Tome and Principe 1-0 on Wednesday night.
Substitute Zinho Gano scored the solitary goal for Guinea Bissau in a cagy match, but it wasn’t enough to hand them a ticket to next year’s competition in Cote d’Ivoire.
The victory in Bissau saw the Djurtus move to the top of Group A with 10 points, one ahead of second-placed Nigeria who play Sierra Leone in the group’s other match.
The Djurtus will now rely on Nigeria to defeat Sierra Leone on Sunday for them to earn a place in next year’s AFCON holding in Cote D’ Ivoire
Sao Tome ceded home advantage to Guinea Bissau because their own stadium has been deemed unfit for use in international competition.
Likewise Sierra Leone has been ordered to play its home games in neighbouring Liberia as none of its stadium was approved by CAF.
