New Ajax manager Alfred Schreuder has heaped praises on Super Eagles forward Calvin Bassey’s ability to play any position in the defense line, saying he’s a massive boost for the team.
Recall that Bassey joined the Eredivisie champions in a deal worth £22 million move from Scottish Premiership giants, Glasgow Rangers over the week.
The 22-year-old comes in as a direct replacement for Argentina international, Lisandro Martinez, who has moved to Manchester United.
Bassey impressed by his former club Rangers last season winning man of the match awards on many occasions.
Bassey was on the losing side with the Rangers in the Europa League final when they lost 5-4 on penalties to the German side Frankfurt.
Bassey was moved to the center-back position following an injury crisis in the team and he slotted in perfectly.
Schreuder raved about the player and is happy with what he brings to the table.
“He brings some power to the team and speed. I think we need that in the back. Bassey is the one-on-one replacement for Martínez,” Schreuder was quoted as saying by Ajax Life.
“That doesn’t mean he can only play centrally, because we also got him as a left-back. It is complementary to what we need.”
Calvin Bassey is a professional footballer who plays as a defender for Eredivisie club Ajax and the Nigeria national team. Bassey is a product of Leicester City’s youth system but didn’t make a senior appearance for the club before joining Rangers on a free transfer in July 2020.
