Manchester United moved back sixth in the Premier League table with a 1-1 draw against Everton at Goodison Park.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic got the opening goal minutes before half-time thanks to a questionable decision by Toffees’ goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg.
In a feisty opening Gareth Barry was lucky not to receive a card when he brought down Zlatan Ibrahimovic while Marcos Rojo saw yellow for a two-footed lunge on Idrissa Gueye which could have easily been a red.
Both teams were struggling in the final third but with the first shot on target of the match Manchester United opened the scoring when Ibrahimovic beat Maarten Stekelenburg to the ball over the top, and the Swedish striker lobbed the Dutchman with the ball finding the net via the crossbar to put United ahead. Ander Herrera came close just before the hour mark when he hit the woodwork with a volley.
Everton finally hit their straps with 75 minutes gone when Kevin Mirallas found Gueye, and the midfielder’s shot from 20 yards almost caught out David De Gea
Mason Holgate then crossed for Enner Valencia, but De Gea was perfectly placed to block the downward header.
And the Toffees made the pressure pay late on when subsistute Marouane Fellaini bundled over Gueye and referee Oliver awarded a penalty.
Baines stepped up and converted the penalty with just two minutes left m to secure a point for Everton.
