The Head Coach, Super Sand Eagles, Audu Ejo, on Wednesday called for urgent grassroots development of beach soccer in the country.
Ejo spoke to the News Agencies in Lagos against the poor performance of the team at the just concluded 2017 FIFA Beach Soccer Championship in Bahamas.
“The problem is that we don’t pay much attention to the grassroots, yet, we expect results.
“If we have leagues like in Ghana and Cote de Ivoire, we would have been better for it.
“In other African countries, they have a league, whereas in our own case, we have to write football clubs to release their players.
“I have to write all the clubs, though, the clubs at times are always reluctant; can we blame them? They have needs for their players.
“The sad thing is that these keep recurring and we can’t do anything to salvage it. It’s almost like a hopeless situation,’’ he said.
Ejo said that the team paid dearly at the World Cup due to lack of early preparations for the tournament.
“A country like Portugal got to Bahamas one month before the competition, while we got there nine days before the tournament,’’ he said.
Ejo said that it would be difficult to get to that level without adequate preparation for several months.
