Football followers in Ebonyi have urged the Super Eagles to wrap up their ‘Russia 2018’ World Cup qualification bid with a positive result against the Lions of Cameroon in Yaounde on Monday.
TheNewsGuru(TNG) reports that Nigeria thrashed Cameroon 4-0 in Uyo on Saturday with goals from Odion Ighalo, Mikel Obi, Victor Moses and Kelechi Iheanacho.
The Eagles are inched closer to the team’s sixth world cup appearance with the highly motivated team, brimming with its returnees stars that missed the ill-fated AFCON 2019 qualifier against South Africa.
Chinedu Chukwugbo Golden Eaglets Goalkeeper at the Ecuador 1995, FIFA U-17 World Cup, said either a win or draw against Cameroon on Monday would guarantee an automatic qualification for Russia 2018.
“Nigeria presently leads the table with nine points and if the team draws against Cameroon on Monday, it will garner 10 points against Cameroon’s three points.
“The highest point Cameroon can garner in their remaining two matches will be six points which will place them on nine points while the Eagles would have obtained 10 points,” he said.
Benjamin Ukwu, a Football Agent attributed the Eagles classic performance to the fitness of the players and the experienced legs drafted into the team.
“The players had successful pre-season trainings with their respective clubs which kept them fit to match the physical inclinations of the Cameroonians.
“The players used impeccable skills and physiological edge to outwit the Cameroonians despite being the African champions, so they must complete the job on Monday,’’ he said.
Chidi Elom, a Staff of Ebonyi Ministry of Youths and Sports noted that the tenacity of home-based goalkeeper, Ikechukwu Ezenwa also contributed to the Eagles’ stability throughout the match.
“We expect that this good runs will be sustained on Monday in Yaounde,” he said.
Chief Louis Udoh, a soccer enthusiast urged the Eagles not be complacent but to approach the remaining matches with utmost seriousness.
“The team should approach the reverse fixture in Yaounde like a cup final because a favourable result would reduce the pressure from its two remaining matches against Zambia and Algeria.
“The coaching crew should retain this bulk of players as the core of the team because they constitute an effective mix of youthfulness and experience,” he said.
On her part, Mrs Angela Ogah, another soccer enthusiast attributed the team’s success to the motivation given to them by all stakeholders, adding that the players must ensure they ended the qualification on a high note.
