Charles Osei-Asibey, President of the Ghana Armwrestling Federation (GAF) on Saturdy said that Africa would produce world champions in the sport if adequately managed.
Osei-Asibey said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at the 8th Africa Armwrestling Championships which ended today at the Teslim Balogun Stadium In Lagos.
He said that the continent was blessed with physically fit men and women who could compete creditably at the world stage.
“Armwrestling is the next big thing in Africa, we need to make quality impression in the world and this is only possible if we master the techniques.
“It is not new to us in this part of the world because we do it in some of our communities for fun.
“Africans are strong in nature, but that alone won’t get us to the top on the sport, so the Africa Armwrestling Federation needs to work on that.
“I am confident that in the next five years the next world champion will come from Africa, ” he said.
Osei-Asibey said GAF would use the opportunity to host the 9th edition of the champioship to popularise the sport in the country.
“We are not hosting the 9th edition because Ghana is the best but we want to use the opportunity to develop and spread the sport in Ghana, ” he said
TheNewsGuru reports that the Armwrestling Federation of Africa (AFA) has awarded Ghana the hosting right of the 9th edition of the championship slated for 2018.
