Leicester suffered their first Champions League defeat as their under-strength side slipped to a record 5-0 thrashing by Porto in their final group game.
Claudio Ranieri made 10 changes to his team, who had already booked their place in the last 16 as Group G winners, and were quickly exposed by the dominant Portuguese side, who needed three points to guarantee their place in the knock-out stages.
Andre Silva headed the home side ahead early on and added a deserved second through Jesus Corona’s volley.
Yacine Brahimi scored a brilliant third just before the break as he backheeled the ball beyond goalkeeper Ben Hamer.
Silva converted a second-half penalty following Danny Drinkwater’s foul, and Diogo Jota rounded off the scoring late on.
It was the biggest defeat ever suffered by an English side in Europe’s top competition.
“I have a clearer idea about my players now,” said an unimpressed Ranieri. “We wanted to see something different, but it was too easy for Porto. We didn’t make them fight to score.
“We can lose, but I want us to show our character and our strength. We didn’t do that well enough.”
The English champions can now focus on domestic fare – they are just two places and two points above the relegation zone.
“Now our minds are on the Premier League,” said Ranieri.
