Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has resigned and will step down at the end of the year.
Woodward was one of the driving forces, along with owner Joel Glazer, behind the controversial European Super League which has been widely condemned.
Woodward resignation is not to do with the reaction United’s involvement in this competition and he will still remain in his role until the end of 2021.
United’s rivals Manchester City withdrew from the ESL on Tuesday and Chelsea are also planning to do so.
Woodward, 49, had been in the role since 2013.
He was set to leave at the end of the year but the decision to announce his departure has been brought forward.
After plans for the ESL were announced on Sunday, Woodward stepped down from his role on Uefa’s Professional Football Strategy Council.
Woodward had significant input into the discussions around a revamped Champions League on Friday.
