Nigerian striker Obafemi Martins has been flown to England to undergo surgery following a knee injury, according to his Chinese Super League outfit Shanghai Shenhua.
The 33-year-old was injured in Tuesday’s Asian Champions League tie with Kashima Antlers and would spend 7 months on the sideline.
In a statement on their Twitter handle, the club wished the former Inter Milan star a successful surgery.
“Martins is flying to UK for surgery today. Be well soon,” the club wrote on their Twitter handle.
The former Seattle Sounders attacker had netted three league goals for Shenhua, who are sixth on the Chinese Super League log.
Although there were speculations that the striker would make the 2018 World Cup in Russia, the injury has now ended any faint chances of him joining the Super Eagles.
