Uyo based club side, Akwa United have reached the semi-final of the Naija Super 8 after defeating Rivers United 1-0 at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena stadium on Monday.
The result sent Rivers United out of the competition, after losing their opening two matches in Group B.
Rivers United was the better side for the majority of the first half but failed to fashion a clear scoring opportunity despite enjoying the majority of the possession.
Lukman Adefemi came close to breaking the deadlock, but could not direct his shot on target from a tight angle.
The win means Akwa United have qualified for the semi-finals with one game to spare in the group stage.
Uche Collins was the hero for Akwa United as his 57th minute strike sealed the win.
Collins followed up a long pass and slotted it home through the legs of Abiodun Akande in goal for Rivers United.
Akwa’s next game is against Lobi on Wednesday, July 12.
According to Fatai Amoo, the coach of Akwa United, he said that their plan before the tournament was to make headway.
“This victory is a good one for us. The aim was to qualify for the semi-finals. Now it is time to get more from the competition by going for the cup. If you are in the semi-finals, you have the chance to win. Now we have the opportunity to give other players a chance to show what they can do in the last match,” he said.
However, Lobi and Yobe stars ended their affair goaless in the first game of the day.
