A member of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and Chairman, Match Commissioners Appointments Committee, Alhaji Ahmed Yussuf. on Friday revived the Emir of Minna football competition.
The competition organised for youth football clubs in the Emirate, went into oblivion two years ago following the lack of sponsors
Worried by that situation, Yussuf donated a trophy to the Emir, Alhaji Umar Farouq Bahago, and assured him that the competition would re-commence “immediately”.
“The tournament will now be organised by the Niger State football Association unlike in the past where youth sports organisation took charge,” he said.
He said that he was motivated to revive the competition because of the monarch’s support for sports, especially football.
“The sport has changed the fortune of many youths; we want such positive impact in the emirate,” he said.
Yussuf said that he was also encouraged by the enthusiasm of youths to play football, and advised other privileged individuals to organise tournaments to ensure more opportunities for the youths.
Receiving the trophy, Bahago commended the donor and the Niger Football Association for it, and challenged others to equally initiate steps that would improve the lot of the underprivileged youths.
He thanked the donor for naming the trophy after him, and promised to continue to support sport activities in the state.
