The Minister of Communications, Adebayo Shittu has said the federal government is in discussions with Google towards accelerating the digital transformation of Nigeria.
Shittu reveals this in his goodwill message on the final day of the Google for Nigeria event held at Landmark Centre, Lagos, Nigeria.
Shittu, who had a meeting with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Google, Sundar Pichai, expressed delight in taking part at the event.
He commended the commitment of Google for complementing government’s effort in implementing ambitious reforms to realizing the Smart Digital Nigeria project.
These efforts, he said, are bearing tangible results already.
“I would like to start by commending the commitment of Messrs Google Nigeria to implement ambitious reforms and bring about macroeconomic stability in the context of the country’s ongoing Smart Digital Nigeria transition process.
“These efforts are bearing tangible results and have laid the foundation for a credible path to fiscal sustainability and collaboration,” he said.
He further stated that “Nigeria has so much more to learn and gain from the digital revolution,” and that “A lot has changed in Nigeria since the huge wave of Internet and mobile adoption globally”.
“This Connectivity has greatly impacted the citizens’ social and economic lives, driving business innovation amongst Nigerian entrepreneurs and enterprises.
“Google, being one of the tech giants in computing and the web, has been at the centre of this digital penetration, with the popularity of its open platforms, powering lots of smart-phones with android and other digital tools.
“The growth in adoption of these trends amongst Nigerians presents huge opportunities for businesses which is important for Government’s ambition on economic diversification.
“However, only a small number of Individuals and enterprises are currently taking full advantage of new digital opportunities available,” he added.
