Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has called for mass turn out in the rallies to mark the anniversary of Islamic revolution on February 10 2017, local media in Iran reported today.
The Islamic Revolution also known as the Iranian Revolution or the 1979 Revolution refers to events involving the overthrow of the Pahlavi dynasty under Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi, who was supported by the United States (US), and its eventual replacement with an Islamic republic under the Grand Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the leader of the revolution, supported by various leftist and Islamist organizations and Iranian student movements.
United States (US) President Donald Trump on assuming duties in Washington signed an executive order banning immigrants from 7 key Islamic countries, including Iran from entering the US, which has produced rancour worldwide, with Iran retaliating.
On Tuesday, Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, also urged Iranians to respond to US “threats” in the nationwide rallies on Friday.
“In the rallies, people will demonstrate that their glory, independence and national sovereignty are bound to the Islamic revolution,” said Rouhani.
The 1979 Revolution is an event seen as a turning point in the history of Iran.
It is expected that people would partake “massively” in the 38th anniversary of the Islamic Revolution this year to show solidarity and unity of the nation with the revolution and the leadership.
“We hope people will participate actively in the ceremonies of Feb. 10, given the current global and regional situation,” the Iranian President said.
Meanwhile, the US has announced sanctions on multiple entities and individuals involved in Iran’s missile development after Tehran carried out latest medium-range ballistic missile test late last month.
Iran has dismissed the concerns over its missile program, calling the tests solely for defensive purposes, and retaliating the US ban on its citizens by also banning US citizens from entering Iran.
