Just like National holidays, the social media is replete with key dates and milestones Internet users celebrate as unofficial ‘weird’ holidays using hashtag, which businesses and social media managers relish.
Businesses and social media managers relish these ‘Holidays’ because they represent opportunities on which contents are pushed around on the social media using the hashtag. Social media managers usually plan corresponding contents to push around on these ‘Holidays’ with the view to drive brand awareness or traffic.
A hashtag is a type of label or metadata tag used on social network and microblogging services which makes it easier for users to find messages with a specific theme or content. Users create and use hashtags by placing the hash character (#) in front of a word or unspaced phrase, either in the main text of a message or at the end. Searching for that hashtag will yield each message that has been tagged with it. A hashtag archive is consequently collected into a single stream under the same hashtag, which results to a trend after some numbers of messages.
For example, on Twitter, the hashtag #TheNewsGuru allows users to find all the tweets that have been tagged using that hashtag. #WomenCrushWednesday, #MondayMotivational and #TGIF are some notorious hashtags. #OccupyNigeria, and most recently #iStandWithNigeria are key examples of hashtags that have been used for political purposes.
Here we have made a list of ‘weird’ potential micro holidays hashtags that can result to trends, which businesses and social media managers can exploit to drive brand awareness or traffic.
