Patrick Olusegun Odegbami, known simply as Segun Odegbami, a retired Nigerian footballer on Monday, said Nigeria can advance its economy with right investment in sports, stressing that sports remains a unifying factor in the country.
Odegbami who made the statement while speaking at the 2017 edition of The Platform, held at Covenant Christian Centre, a nation and governance building program, where he spoke on the topic “With Sports we can Nigeria”.
Narrating his own stories, Odegbami explained how Sports can help boost the state of Nigeria and Africa to a larger extension.
He said, hosting World Sports events unlocks Tourism, Infrastructure Development, Medicine, unlimited growth while urging the youth to begin to prepare themselves in order to better enjoy the opportunities.
Making reference to the Nigerian civil war, Mr Odegbami said the Igbos could not find another way to edge out of the effects of war but through football – this led to the establishment of Rangers Football Club in 1970.
He added that the club which ruled African football in a few years was more than a football club, but a movement by the Igbo people.
He also said if properly harnessed, sports have the ability to effect change and drive away societal ills like poverty, illiteracy and HIV/AIDS.
