A client, Mrs. Joy Ifeoma has dragged Niger Insurance Plc to court over alleged issuance of dud cheque, which was in payment of her claims on a life policy taken out years before, ‘bounced’ twice.
The petitioner claims that the cheque was dishonoured even after the company, had pleaded with her to re-present at a future date.
According to reports in the court when the case came up today, before Justice Sonaike in Court 21 of the High Court, sitting in Lagos, the case was adjourned to Monday, October 30, 2017.
When TheNewsGuru.com contacted, the Secretary, Niger Insurance, Taiwo Otuneye, via telephone, Otuneye who was visibly angry and unwilling to speak about the issue yelled at our reporter, “who gave you my number? who asked you to call me? Tell the person to link you with the Corporate Affairs. I am not the best person to talk about this.”
Continuing with the phone conversation, TheNewsGuru requested that Otuneye should help provide the contact of the Corporate Affairs Manager, but he then hung up the call and refused to pick his calls afterwards.
Meanwhile, a recent report published in Vanguard newspapers shows insurance claims have grown by over N5.9 billion in the first half of 2017, H1’17.
In the report, The financial statements of 22 major leading insurance companies for the period ended 30th June 2017 shows claims expenses to be at over N40 billion against N34.1 billion recorded in the corresponding period of 2016.
Specifically, the breakdown of Niger Insurance financials in H1’17 show that gross premium grew massively by 136 percent to N3.9 billion (from N1.2 billion), however, a rise in claims expenses at 229 percent still outpaced it.
