…Reactions from the streets
Nigeria on Monday (today) clocked 58 years after gaining independence on October 1, 1960.
However, different reactions have trailed the 58th independence of Nigeria.
The TNG crew recently took to the streets to sample the opinions of Nigerians on her 58th anniversary.
Read their opinions below:
“Nigeria for me is slowly but steadily recovering from years of wastefulness and impunity. We could have been worst off if the incumbent leader is not elected in 2015. The healing process takes time. Nigerians should endure more. I see light at the end of the tunnel soon”. – Balogun Ayomide, Artisan
“I really don’t like talking about Nigeria because everything is at a stage of collapse right now. Most times I feel sad remembering that I am a Nigerian. We are so backward in this country. You are still seeing me here because my travel plans has not worked out. Hopefully by next year, I won’t be here to talk about this stagnant country again” – Philip Akinwunmi, unemployed graduate
“Buhari has messed up Nigeria big time. For the past three years now, there is hardly a day that reports of killings by Fulani herdsmen do not make it to the front pages of national newspapers. Yet he has done nothing to arrest the situation. But he can quickly proscribe IPOB for demanding their rights in a peaceful manner. What a hypocrite! Nigeria we hail thee. Happy Independence anniversary to them, not to me” – Paul Chukwudi, Businessman
“Yes, we are not there yet but with the way things are turning out, we are getting there soon. Gone are those days when politicians and other top government officials loot without conscience. Now, there is a subconscious awareness that an agent of government called EFCC is working and ready to jail anyone who abuses his office or steal from our treasury. The last three years have witnessed popular thieves begging and returning stolen monies to the coffers of the government. That has never happened before and we are happy that Buhari made that happen in our time. Sooner than expected, Nigeria will take her place in the comity of prosperous nations around the world. Happy 58th Independence to Nigeria and Nigerians all over the world!” – Margaret Ojo, Banker
“Nigeria is 58 already? See how time flies. I still remember with nostalgia the feelings of that beautiful day of October 1, 1960. Its not been easy but the future is bright. If Nigeria is great today, we can make it greater tomorrow. And if its not yet great, we can still make it great. Pointing accusing fingers at anyone as being responsible for our woes will not land us anywhere. We should be up and doing; both the government and the governed. Nigeria shall be great again!” – Mrs. Evelyn, Pensioner
“Whoever is contesting public positions should know that governance is not about good times alone. Bad times are part of it too. And that is why the so called leaders must brace up and stop complaining. The task of moving Nigeria forward is collective but elected and appointed government officials should know that they carry greater percentage or share of the task. Another election year is approaching and we are already seeing posters everywhere. Nigerians are tired of complaining of same problems every election year. Our politicians need to be up and doing. Good luck Nigeria” – Pastor Felix Akande
“For me, Nigeria is slipping back to dictatorship where the votes of the people do not count. What happened in Osun recently is daylight robbery by the ruling APC. Does that not show to you the direction that the 2019 general elections will go. Here is a man who came in through a democratic and truly free and fair elections. An incumbent even conceded defeat to him before counting of votes were concluded despite predictions of crisis everywhere. But look at where he has taken Nigeria in just three years. I feel so sorry for this nation particularly the generation unborn. I hope they won’t curse us all in our graves with the kind of country that we might likely hand over to them. There is nothing to celebrate. People don’t celebrate death or disaster. This is our position in Nigeria now and we can only hope that things get better” – Jummy Akintunde, Political analyst.
