Spanish giants, Real Madrid survived Chelsea’s nightmare as Nigeria’s Samuel Chukwueze scored to ensure Villarreal eliminated Bayern Munich out of the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday night.
TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Real Madrid held a 3-1 lead from the first leg of the tie but Chelsea pulled a stunner on the Spanish giants at the Bernabeu with the second leg of the tie ending in a 4:4 draw on aggregate at full time.
Karim Benzema put on a clinic for Los Blancos, displaying a clinical edge in the final third to score all three goals for the visitors at Stamford Bridge but it was Rodrygo who pulled level to give Real Madrid hope in the second leg encounter.
Fifteen minutes into the second leg, Mount, on the edge of the box, latched on to a flick from Werner and dispatched a firm right-footed strike past Courtois. He took a good first touch before burying his effort into the right corner of the net.
Into the second half at 51 minute, Chelsea again pulled the strings as Rudiger directed a pinpoint header past Courtois. Mount swinged a dangerous cross in from the right flank that sailed into the middle. Rudiger attacked the delivery before placing his effort with precision into the bottom-right corner.
However, in the 63rd minute of play, VAR played a huge moment in the tie as Alonso believed that he had fired Chelsea in front after dispatching a strike past Courtois at the second attempt.
However, VAR ruled that he handled the ball after seeing his first strike blocked by Carvajal. There was a slight touch and Madrid got a reprieve.
Meanwhile, in the 75th minute of play, Werner scored to put Chelsea in front of the tie. The German held his composure to bury a low strike into the net. It was Kovacic who released the forward in the inside-left channel and he cut back past the challenge of Carvajal. Werner still had work to do, but his effort clipped off Courtois and spun into the bottom-right corner.
Rodrygo, however, endured that Real Madrid remained in the tournament. The Brazilian guided a first-time strike past Mendy in the 80th minute, but the goal was all about Modric.
The veteran midfielder lifted a sublime cross to the back post with the outside of his right foot. Rodrygo only had to connect with the ball to score and did not disappoint with a deft touch to find the bottom-right corner.
Heading to extra-time after Rodrygo’s goal kept Madrid in the game after a brilliant surge from Chelsea, Benzema scored in the 96th minute of play to put Madrid back in front.
Benzema haunted Chelsea once more by scoring his fourth goal of the tie to put Madrid on course for the semi-finals. Vinicius did well down the left flank and dug out a cross for the Frenchman to attack. He placed his effort away from Mendy into the bottom-left corner with precision.
TNG reports Real Madrid won the game 5:4 on aggregate to join Villarreal that had earlier secured their place in the last four.
